Food for thought: a coaching metaphor

Imagine you’re driving a car and you’re at the bottom of a steep mountain. You want to get to the top but it seems scary and you’re not sure how to get there, as there are several roads you can take. You know the view from the top will be magnificent and totally worth it, but getting there seems intimidating.

Now imagine you have someone in the passenger seat who's knowledgeable about mountains and is eager to explore these roads with you. The passenger wants nothing more than for you to get to the top and have that rewarding experience. On your road trip, you’ll have inspiring conversations, you may hit a few bumps (and that's okay), and you might just surprise yourself on how you got to the top. You eventually make it to your destination and realize it’s even better than you could’ve imagined. The passenger never gave you turn by turn directions but simply guided you at your own pace. You as the driver feel empowered and accomplished. Although you had support along the way, every decision and turn on those roads were your idea. Doesn’t that feel satisfying?

This is what health coaching is. You (the client) are the driver and I (the coach) am the passenger. I want to help you reach the top. But unlike some other professional relationships, this is on your terms.
